VIDEOS
Promised Land, Anthills, Cities and Other Angles of Repose, a visual narrative in three parts (2012)
In this experimental video the artist links images of ants, anthills, mountains, cities, hill towns and angles of repose (the notion that things piled up will come to rest at a self-supporting angle). Influences of travel and daily observation of her immediate environment, including large anthills of the Alleghany Mound Ants near her home in Vermont, reveal themselves in these deeply familiar forms.
Tracks and Traces (2013)
In this experimental video the artist again links images from drawings, animal track, human and other; this time with the question of
origins of written language. This video seems to have disappeared from YouTube. Please try again later.
TEACHING
Printmaking is a versital image-making process that can be very experimental. Janet can guide you in various techniques including woodcut, drypoint etching, and experimental approaches with or without a press. You will have access to many materials including a small etching press. Available for individual tutorials or small group instruction.
Ever wonder what to do with all those old photo albums? This workshop will use your family photos, stories and memorabilia to create a handmade book or object honoring your loved ones and those you never knew. You will learn simple techniques for creating a fold-out book or object in a creative and supportive atmosphere. As a gift or as a family keepsake, it is guaranteed to be treasured.
No art experience necessary.
There is no better way of knowing and remembering a place than by drawing. Our affection for the earth-toned architecture, the winding cobbled streets, the smell of incense in mysterious interiors of churches, the taste of culinary delights, the overflowing textures and colors of the street markets, a late afternoon latte at a sidewalk cafe, these are just a few of the reasons to carry a sketchbook while traveling. Tuscany invites us to slow down, be present to its beauty, and to remember her in the quiet act of observation, drawing with our simple tools of paper, pencil, pen, and watercolors as we breathe in its historic charm.
You will learn how to make quick and slow sketches using pencil, pen, and watercolor focusing on what speaks to you. Through demonstrations and one-on-one instruction you will learn the basics of rendering architecture, details, doorways, colors, people, vistas, and more. Your unique imagination is key to a memorable travel journal to share with family and friends. Come with an open mind and a sense of adventure. All abilities are welcome.
In this workshop you will learn approaches to drawing people and places using simple materials and techniques including watercolor, collage and bookmaking to create your own travel journal. We will construct a fold-out book to collect our creations. Bring photos and memorabilia from a previous trip or images from magazines of your dream vacation. All other materials provided.
To see more travel journal sketches, visit Travel Journal page.
Each workshop explores a brief history of the use of collage in the arts, demonstrations of techniques, basic design, lots of inspiring materials to use, showing of samples, and ample time for each participant to create their own pieces at their own pace. This workshop can be brought to your home with a group of friends for a special occasion. Inquire about having a collage party in your own home!
Creativity has proven to be a wonderfully enriching experience for people of all professions who are ready to give their imagination fee play. Einstein said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” You will be guided through meditation, journal work, book-making, drawing and collage to explore and express your creative voice in a safe and nurturing environment. No art experience necessary.
Learn how to be a keen observer. Then learn to use basic drawing implements to interpret your natural environment. Learn how to attend to what speaks to you in the natural world through meditation and practice.
“If you want to draw a pine tree, go to the pine tree,” the haiku poet, Basho, says. In this workshop you will realize the benefits of drawing: slowing down, unplugging and being present in a beautiful and supportive atmosphere…and learning skills to take home.
Inquire about tutorials or workshops. Gift cards are available for instruction.
This 3 to 5 day retreat is a time to go within in a quiet, un-plugged and safe atmosphere. Participants will develop an understanding and appreciation for the relationship between the conscious and unconscious aspects of the psyche. Through creative projects we will gain insight to and discover links between imagination and dream life.
This workshop is held once or twice a year in Vermont. Inquire about scheduling a dream retreat at another
location.
“You are such gentle, spacious teachers. I love my book that I made when we worked together during our dream retreat last Oct. I would never have thought I could make the book, engage in the process and then enjoy the outcome so much. But you guided me gently through it, with no negative judgments along the way, just support and constructive guidance. I have come to appreciate different teaching styles so much. I think compassion is a great teaching asset don’t you? You two have that in spades.”– Marie Rice, NYC, graduate of Bank Street College of Education
Gift cards are available for instruction.
Using journal writing, guided imagery and art-making, Janet and her husband, Tom Verner, will guide participants through the creative and spiritual possibilities of the written word and imagery.

“I approach teaching as an introduction to seeing our world anew. We learn best in an atmosphere of calmness and expansiveness so, we start by quieting the mind and centering our focus. From this calm and centered place, students become more receptive to what speaks to them and the skills necessary for the task require less effort.”
The great haiku poet Matsuo Basho said, “Learn about a pine tree from a pine tree, and about a bamboo stalk from a bamboo stalk.” It is through reverent observation that we know the world. Let’s start there.
Janet often teaches workshops with her husband, Jungian psychologist and magician, Tom Verner. Contact us for further information to set up a workshop for your organization or small group.
ABOUT JANET
A Vermont artist for over 30 years, Janet Fredericks has her studio in Lincoln, Vermont where her artwork is taking on a bio-regional quality, incorporating the visual language of her natural environment .
Her drawings and paintings are intended to give the sense of entering into the landscape rather than a surface perspective. This follows her lifelong interest in the seen and unseen worlds; spirit and matter.
She is a Vermont Council on the Arts and New England Foundation for the Arts Fellowship recipient. The artist exhibits internationally and is in many corporate and private collections.
